A Fresh Model of Emotional Competence

A definition: Emotional Competence is the behavioral application of Emotional Intelligence. Translation: how your EI shows up in your life, in your behavior. It’s the whole point of being emotionally intelligent.

I prefer the word “competence” over “intelligence” because:

  • it is inherently less judgmental,

  • implies that improvement is possible, and

  • it speaks to incremental learning.

How do you know how competent you are being?

First, be mindful of the Six Results of Emotional Competence in Action, for Individuals (top right of this page). That’s a pretty good mini-evaluation. Do some self-reflection and observation. Add to that with feedback from others.

Once you’ve become more mindful of your behavior and the results you are getting, the next question is: What are the competencies that enable these results? In other words, What skills am I putting to use, or not, that are creating the results I’m getting?

To answer that, we use an EI model – a set of competencies in an structure that makes it easier to understand. You can explore the most popular models through The State of the Art page.

My contribution is the “fresh” model offered on this site. It is inspired by a desire to have an accurate, comprehensive, yet simple model. Each of the three dominant models leave something to be desired, for me.

This model is offered here as “open source” – use it, play with it, modify it, make it your own.

The model can be found in this set of 12 slides:  Emotional Competence Model for web site.  Once you get the basic idea from those slides, you can move on to this 20 minute self-evaluation: Emotional Competence Model Self Eval Questions. It is best done by hand, and a printed hard copy will make that work for you.

Doing this self-assessment will probably raise a number of questions for you, and perhaps some uncertainty. That’s OK; exploring that territory is an appropriate step in emotional competency development. Suggestion: talk it over with one or more people who know you.

The model can be mapped to portions of the three predominant models – those portions that I find practical, meaningful, and reflective of human behavior.

Hopefully you find this easy to use and helpful. This site will soon have a “comments” area where you can share your experience and see how the questions of others have been responded to.
